Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday is a very loved day in Estonian culture and it is also a very old tradition. It is always on the first Tuesday when the new moon is up in the sky. It usually falls between 8th February to 7th March.

A very old tradition is sliding. In the old times people believed that when you slide a lot then the flax will grow a lot. In modern times people of course don`t believe it but they like to slide anyway.

Also people believed that when you cut your hair on Shrove Tuesday then the hair would become beautiful.

Eating was also very important on the Shrove Tuesday. In the old times people ate 9 times, because then the corn was good (they believed so). Today we eat pea soup usually on the Shrove Tuesday. Very famous are also the shrove muffins.

I enjoy the Shrove Tuesday and I think that there are lot of people who do the same thing.
