Kui inimese maos seeditakse toit ära maomahlade abil, siis veise maos elab loendamatu hulk imepisikesi elusolendeid, keda kutsutakse mikroorganismideks. Need lõhustavad lehma maos toitu. Tänu sellele saavad lehm ja hobune söönuks ka kuivanud rohust, mida inimene ja näiteks kass või koer üldse seedida ei saa.
